Maha Kumbh Mela 2010

Maha Kumbh Mela is one of the most popular festivals in India. It is one of the greatest religious occasions for Hindus.
The Kumbh Mela is celebrated four times in the time span of twelve years. It rotates among four locations: Allahabad (also called Prayag), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik.

Myth about Kumbh Mela
During the creation of the Earth, Gods were suffering from a curse due to their pride and lack of respect to a sage. They became feeble. To get ride of curse they approached Lord Vishnu to help them and regain their lost strength. Lord Vishnu advised them to churn the ocean to obtain Amrita (the nectar of immortality, strength and prosperity) from it. Finding out the Amrita from the Ocean was not an easy task. So gods sought help from demons and promised them to give away half of the amrita. But after finding out the amrita gods did not want to share it with demons because they never wanted the Amrita to be misused by the demons. So they fled away. So demons chased gods. During the chase, four drops of nectar (amrita) fell on the earth at four different places that is called today Allahabad (Prayag), Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. So these cities are considered as extremely holy & sacred places for Hindus.
