About Bandipur National Park
Bandipur National Park (BNP) is one of the widely famous national parks and tiger reserves of India. It is situated in the state Karnataka, South India. It is a part of well-known Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, South India. BNP is contiguous with other famous national parks & wildlife sanctuaries of South India like Mudumalai National Park (Tamil Nadu), Wyanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala), and Na garhole National Park to the northwest.
Endowed with a moderate climate and diverse geographical features, this famous park supports a significant variety of rich flora and fauna. It is a complete paradise for wildlife. It is an ideal place for nature lovers and wildlife lovers is south India. A sanctuary of 90 square km was created at this site in the Bandipur Reserve Forest in the year of 1931. In 1973 it the sanctuary got the status of Bandipur Tiger Reserve with the area of 880 square km. In 1974 it got the status of Bandipur National Park with the total area of 874.2 square km.

Trees found in the Bandipur National Park are Common Teak (Tectona grandis), Rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia), Sandalwood (Santalum album), Indian Kino (Pterocarpus marsupium), Satinwood (Chloroxylon swetenia), Axlewood (Anogeissus latifolia), Kadam tree (Adina cordifolia), Grewia salicifolia, Indian-laurel (Terminalia tomentosa), Odina wodiar, Indian Gooseberry (Emblica officinalis), Black Cutch (Acacia catechu), Golden Shower Tree (Cassia fistula), Bamboo trees, Shorea talura, Indigoberry (Randia uliginosa), Crape-myrtle (Lagerstroemia lanceolata), Black Myrobalan (Terminalia chebula), Schleichera trijuga, etc. The park is very famous for sandalwood (Chandan).
Fauna in Bandipur National Park Animals: Major animals found in BNP are Tiger, Elephant, Chital, Dhole, Gaur, Sambar, Sloth Bear, Chausingha, Pig, Muntjac, Langur, Monkey, Four-horned Antelope, Mouse Deer, Wild Dog, Barking Deer, Hyena, Wild Boar, Panther, etc.
Birds: Common birds found in the park are Grey Jungle Fowl, Grey Headed Fish Eagle, Bay Owl, Brown Owl, Red Headed Vulture, Woolly-necked Stork, Plain Flower Pecker, Peacock, Little Spider Hunter, Malabar Trogon, Malabar PiedHornbill, Nilgiri Flycatcher, Honey Buzzard, PompadourGreen Pigeon, etc.
Reptiles: Reptiles found in the park are Common Cobra, King Cobra, Rat Snake, Viper, Python, Water Snake, Marsh Crocodile, Monitor Lizard, Common Lizard, Tree Frog, Toad, Tortoise, Chameleon, etc.

How to Get There :- Air: The nearest airport to the BNP is located at Mysore situated – 80 km from the BNP. Another option is Bangalore Airport (220 km). Rail: The nearest Railway Station to the BNP is located at Nanjungud – 55 km from the BNP. Road: BNP is located on the highway connecting Mysore and Ooty (80 km). There are regular buses and easily available taxis from all the neighboring cities, mainly Mysore, 80km away. |
