About Kanha National Park
Kanha National Park is a national park and tiger reserve in the districts of Mandla and Balaghat of Madhya Pradesh State. The park was established on 1 June 1955. Its coverage area is approximately 1940 square km. It is sprawling in the two districts Mandla and Balaghat. Kanha Tiger Reserve formed by combination of the national park area, buffer zone and neighboring Phen Sanctuary. Kanha is widely famous for wildlife viewing, birding, nature trekking, and wildlife tourism. It has significant population of royal Bengal tiger, leopard, sloth bear, stag (barahsingha or swamp deer), and wild dog. Rich in its flora and fauna the Kanha National Park & Tiger Reserve deserves the attentions of wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world.
Flora in Kanha National Park
Kanha has three main forest types – moist peninsular Sal forests, southern tropical dry deciduous mixed forests and southern tropical moist mixed deciduous forests. The park has varied topography of huge plateau and vast grass land. Sal forests, Bamboo forests, Haldu, Bija and Dhaora, etc are major trees found in the park. During the cooler and the greener months, Kanha National Park becomes remarkably picturesque with its lush greenery. This period is perfect time to visit this famous park.
Fauna in Kanha National Park
Kanha National Park is rich in its wildlife. Wildlife enthusiasts easily sport a number of wild animals, birds, and reptiles in this park. The park is widely noted for its tiger population. Wildlife lovers from all over the world visit Kanha Tiger Reserve to spot royal Bengal tigers in their natural surroundings. Beside tigers, other animals can be spotted at Kanha are leopard, panther, barking deer, langur, gaur, wild dog, sloth bear, wild pig, swamp deer, spotted deer, jackal, fox, nilgai, gray langurs, mongoose, hyena, jungle cat, barahsingha, chausingha, etc.
The Kanha Park is also rich in avifauna and ideal place for bird watching. There are about 175 different species of birds in the park. Popular bird species you can watch in the park are Green Pigeon, Partridges, Rock Pigeon, Hoopoes, Orioles, Spotted Parakeets, Pond Herons, Peacock, Egret, Stork, Pintail, Drongo, Rock Pigeon, Pea Fowl, Spur Fowl, Jungle Fowl, Ring Doves, Kingfisher, Indian Rollers, Papiha, Bee-eater, Warblers, Teal, Woodpecker, Finch, Owl, Warbler, Fly-catcher, etc.

The best time to visit Kanha National Park is during coolers and greener months. The park is open from mid November to June and close rest of the year.
