Fatehpur Sikri is a famous tourist destination and historical city in Agra district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city was constructed by great Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1570 as his capital. The city served as the Mughal Empire’s capital from 1571 to 1585. In 1585 it was deserted due to the scarcity of drinking water.
The historical city of Fatehpur Sikri is situated at the distance of 40 km away from Agra. People come to visit the magnificent Taj Mahal at Agra do not forget to visit Fatehpur Sikri. This historical city is also declared as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. The city is known for its magnificent monuments, palaces, forts, temples, mosques and ruins of monuments.
The city is one of the finest examples of mughal architectural glory at its height. Its many palaces, mosques, halls, and buildings satisfy Akbar’s creative and aesthetic desires.

Important Buildings & Attractions at Fatehpur Sikri
Buland Darwaza : It is the largest gateways in the world. This astounding example of mughal architecture is also known as the “Gateway of Magnificence”. This magnificent architecture towers above the courtyard of the mosque. To see the Buland Darwaza at sunset is a delightful experience.
Diwan-I-Am : It is a magnificent building typology found in many mughal cities. Also known as the Hall of Public Audience, the hall was used for celebrations and public prayers. It is a pavilion-like rectangular structure and has cloisters on three sides fronting a large open space. The west side of the pavilion had the emperor’s throne.
Diwan-I-Khas : It is also known as the “Hall of Private Audience”. It is famous for its central pillar with 36 domed brackets supporting a circular platform where Akbar’s throne was located. At their place Akbar and his ministers discuss their faiths and ideas.
Jama Masjid : This grand mosque is also known as the “Friday Mosque” or “Dargah Mosque”. It is believed that its designs and structure is the copy of the main mosque at Mecca. It is famous for its beautiful design which is perfect blend of Persian and Hindu elements.
Panch Mahal : It is one of the most important buildings at Fatehpur Sikri. It is a five-storeyed elegant structure. The ground floor of this magnificent palace has 176 intricately carved columns. Each floor over here is smaller that the one below. The top floor of the palace provides a magnificent view of Fatehpur Sikri and its surroundings.
Tomb of Salim Chisti : It is a white marble sheathed tomb within the Jama Masjid's courtyard.
Other Attractions : Besides these there are many other attractions which can be seen on Fatehpur Sikri visit. They are Anup Talao, Hujra-i-Anup Talao, Mariam-uz-Zamani's Palace, Naubat Khana (Drum House), Turkish Sultana’s House, Pachisi Court, Birbal’s House, Sunahra Makan, etc.
