Hawa Mahal is one of the major landmarks in Jaipur. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions of India. It is a five storeyed palace with number of small windows and screens, with arched roofs (a pyramid shaped structure) built in red sandstone and quick like. It was built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in the year of 1799. The architecture of this palace was designed by Lal Chand Usta. The main purpose behind building this palace was to allow the royal ladies to watch the daily life and activities in the street below without being seen.
The Palace has 953 beautifully carved windows. It is very interesting that the air passes through these windows gives the palace its name (Hawa Mahal – Palace of Winds), and keeps it cool and breezy even in the hot months. The entrance of the building opens into a big courtyard. The courtyard is surrounded by double storeyed buildings on three sides. There are three more storeys on the eastern wind of the palace. The strange structure of the Hawa Mahal is a great example of the Rajputana architecture, strongly influenced by mughal style of architecture.
