Khajuraho is a village located in Chhatarpur district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It has been a globally famous tourist destination with its architecturally beautiful temples. The Khajuraho group of monuments has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also considered as one of the Seven Wonders of India.
The village of Khajuraho has the largest group of Hindu and Jain temples, famous for their intricately carved erotic sculptures. Some people call “Khajuraho Temples” as the “Temples of Love”. Architecturally beautiful temples of Khajuraho deserve the attentions of tourists and travellers from all over the world.
Temples at Khajuraho are dedicated to Hindu deities and a few of temples are dedicated to Jain pantheon. Temples are built in north Indian Shikhara temple style. Many of temples’ outside walls have erotic sculptures which are the attractions of Khajuraho visit. Intricately carved sculptures also depict the daily life of people of that time.
Temples of Khajuraho have been divided into three groups
Western Group : This group is perhaps the most popular. It has entirely Hindu temples and depicts the finest examples of Chandela art at its height. Important Temples located in Western Group of Khajuraho Temples are:
• Kandariya Mahadeo – Dedicated to Lord Shiva. 31 m high temple with exquisite carvings.
• Chaunsath Yogini – The only granite temples dedicated to Goddess Kali.
• Chitragupta Temple – Dedicated to Sun God (Surya Dev).
• Vishwanatha Temple – Dedicated to Lord Brahma – the creator of the world.
• Lakshmana Temple – A magnificent Vaishnava Temple Lord Vishnu & Goddess Laxmi.
• Matangeshwara Temple – Dedicated to Lord Shiva
Eastern Group : Important temples located in Eastern Group of Khajuraho Temples are :
• Parshavanath Temple – The Largest Jain Temple
• Adinath Temple – Dedicated to first Jain Tirthankars Adinath.
• Vamana Temple – Hindu Temple – famous for sculptures of Apsaras on sensuous poses.
• Ghantai Temple – Jain Temple – Famous for Frescoes
• Brahma Temple
• Javari Temple : Lavishly carved Doorway & outstanding sculptures on its exteriors.
Southern Group : Important temples in Southern Group of Khajuraho Temple are :
• Duladeo Temple – Dedicated to Shiva. Exteriors sculptured with ornamented Apsara.
• Chaturbhuja Temple – Dedicated to Vishnu. Boasts a massive carved image of Vishnu.
How to Reach
By Air : Khajuraho is connected by daily and direct flight by Delhi, Agra, Varanasi and Kathmandu.
By Rail : The nearest railheads to arrive Khajuraho are Mahoba (65 km), Harpalpur (94 km), Satna (117 km) and Jhansi (175 km). Jhansi and Satna are convenient railheads for visitors from Delhi, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai.
By Road : Khajuraho is connected by regular bus services with Mahoba, Harpalpur, Satna, Jhansi, Gwalior, Agra, Jabalpur and Bhopal.
