Mahabodhi Temple is a great Buddhist temple located in Bodhgaya in the state of Bihar, India. It is one of the holiest sites and pilgrimage centres in Buddhism and visited regularly by both Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims. Many Hindus believed Lord Buddha as the manifestation of Lord Vishnu.
Bodhgaya is a small town in the Indian state of Bihar. It is the place where Gautam Siddharth got nirvana (enlightenment) and called Lord Buddha. The Mahabodhi Temple is one of the ancient Buddhist temples built in brick. The central tower of the Mahabodhi Temples is 55 meters long (180 feet). Next to western side of the temple, there is the holy Bodhi Tree (Pipal Tree) under which the Gautam Siddharth got his enlightenment.

Inside the Mahabodhi Temple there is a huge statue of seated Lord Buddha and right hand touching the earth. This gesture of Lord Buddha is known as the earth-witness mudra. This is the posture in which Gautam Buddha skilled with the supreme enlightenment. The statue is made of black stone and covered in gold sheets and dressed in bright orange dressing gown. The courtyard of the Bodhi temple complex is studded with many smaller Buddhist temples, Stupas and Buddha statues.
In the year of 2002, the Mahabodhi Temple is declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Presently, many Buddhist temples and monasteries have been constructed within and around the Mahabodhi Temple Complex. These temples have been built by the Buddhist followers of different countries like Sri Lanka, Japan, Bhutan, Sikkim, Nepal, Thailand, Tibet, China, Myanmar, Vietnam, etc. These temples reflect the architectural excellence and fine designs of their respective countries. Tourists and Buddhist followers from all over the world visit Bodhgaya to see the Mahabodhi Temple.
How to Reach Bodhgaya
By Air : Gaya Airport (Bodhgaya International Airport) is about 14 km away from city centre. It is well connected with many of cities of India. Patna Airport is at the distance of 135 km from Bodhgaya.
By Rail : Nearest railhead to access Bodhgaya is Gaya Junction. Gaya junction is well connected with major cities of India.
By Road : Gaya and Bodhgaya are well connected with major cities of eastern and northern India like Patna, Nalanda, Rajgir, Varanasi, Kolkata, etc.
