The magnificent Red Fort in Delhi was built by great mughal emperor Shah Jahan. He started the construction of this mammoth fort city in 1638 and the construction was completed in the year of 1648. Originally the fort was known as the “Qila-i-Mubarak” – meaning the Blessed Fort. The fort complex was the residence of royal mughal family. The fort was constructed by Shah Jahan after shifting his capital from Agra to Delhi. The fort complex is built in red sandstone. Hence it is called Red Fort or Lal Qila.

The fort complex is architecturally beautiful and depicts the very high level of art form, ornamental work and architectural excellence. The magnificent architecture of the Red Fort Complex is perfect blend of Persian, Indian and European art form. Today, this magnificent fort complex is one of the most important and beautiful building complexes of India which deserves the attention of tourists from all over the world.
The walls of the Red Fort are beautifully dressed and decorated by heavy string-courses. There are two entrance gates to the fort complex – Delhi Gate and Lahore Gate. The main entrance is the Lahore Gate. The Lahore Gate leads to a long covered street. The street is lined with stalls and shops selling exquisite handicrafts and souvenirs. The fort complex houses museums and many beautiful palaces and buildings.
Some of important buildings within the Red Fort complex are Diwan-i-Khas (the Hall of Private Audience), Diwan-i-Aam (the Hall of Public Audience), Rang Mahal (Palace of Colors – Imtiaz Mahal), Khas Mahal (Private Palace), Moti Masjid (Pearl Mosque), Hayat-Baksh Bagh, Hamam, Mumtaz Mahal, Red Fort Archeological Museum, Red Fort Museum of Arms & Weapons, etc. Today, a Light & Sound show describing Mughal history is a tourist highlight in the evenings.
